Aqua-Café : Where the water flows

july 9 - August 22, 2010
Trouble in Paradise/Medi(t)ation of Survival
National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto

Making a "Cafe" for drinking water by work-in-progress, kneading 12 tons of earth of old house which was destroyed because of construction of freeway and water of Biwako Canal, in front of National Museum of Modern Art, kyoto.

Where the water flows : Aqua-Café

Molded earth needs water in order to hold its form, and humans need water in order to survive. The Lake Biwa Canal, which was constructed 120 years ago, is the cornerstone of the modernization of Kyoto City, and it continues to hydrate and enrich the minds and bodies of the people. Meanwhile, in the western end of Kyoto, many old houses and bamboo forests are being destroyed to make way for freeway construction.
Approximately 12 tons of Edo-period earth and several dozen bamboos will be carried from this site, and an 'Aqua-Café' for drinking water is built in front of the National Museum of Modern Art which was built alongside the Canal, as a work-in-progress using the water from the Canal. The ellipse plan comes from the First Pit Shaft of Lake Biwa Canal, which was dug 47m depth by human hands for making the First Tunnel of the Canal. Many workers had been died from the hard labor of digging the Shaft.
After completed, Aqua-Café works as a café for drinking water as well as a platform for various workshops on the relationship among human being, water and environment.
And after the exhibition, the body is decomposed and the material of earth and bamboo are brought back and reused.
